Helen Foster Snow (HFS) was a famous American writer, journalist, social activist

and dedicated friend of the Chinese people. In order to promote mutual understanding

and friendship between China and the United States and its people, to carry forward

Helen Foster Snow’s legacy of “bridging”, and to raise interest in translation among

college students and to find talented young translators, China’s Shaanxi Translation

Association (STA) established the “Helen Snow Translation Award” in 2002. The

STA has successfully sponsored six previous competitions nationwide in China.

Competition Sponsors

The seventh Competition for the HFS Translation Award is scheduled to be held from

March 30 to May 31, 2018. It is jointly sponsored by Edgar Snow Center of China in

Peking University, Southern Utah University (SUU) in the United States, Northwest

University (NWU) in China, and the STA.

The guidelines for the competition are as follows.

Competition Divisions

First, the competition is designed to cover bilingual translation. It consists of two

divisions, namely English-Chinese (E-C) Translation and Chinese-English (C-E)

Translation. Both the English and Chinese passages to be translated will be articles

about Helen Snow. The guidelines and the two passages will be released and

published on the STA website on March 30, 2018. The texts can be downloaded from

the website of STA: hppt://www.chsta.org.

Second, to be eligible, the contestants must be students enrolled at higher learning

institutions in China and the United States. This can include graduate students,

undergraduates and junior college students. Participation in the competition is free of

charge.

Competition Awards

Third, each of the translation divisions offers 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd Grade Awards

respectively (1 st place is awarded to only one individual, but the other grades will

include multiple recipients), plus an Award of Excellence. Certificates of Honor and

souvenirs will be awarded to all the award winners. The name list of all winners will

be uploaded onto the STA website on September 21, 2018, along with the benchmark

translation of the two passages produced by leading professionals in the field.

Fourth, SUU offers one tuition scholarship for the top Chinese winner in this

competition. Two finalists will be selected from among the Chinese recipients of the

1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd Grade Awards by means of a supplementary English proficiency test

and interview. This must be submitted to SUU by August 31. The two finalists must

write an essay of 300-500 words explaining why he or she wants to study at Southern

Utah University for a semester, and then send the essay as an e-mail attachment to

global@suu.edu before August 31, 2018. SUU will make the final decision and notify

the scholarship recipient by September 30. The scholarship recipient is expected to

arrive at SUU on January 3, 2019 to attend the spring semester.

Fifth, NWU offers a tuition scholarship to study Chinese Language and Culture to the

top American winner in this competition. The candidate recipients will be selected

from among the 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd Grade Award winners through a supplementary

interview conducted by the College of International Cultural Exchange, NWU. NWU

will choose the best one as the scholarship recipient. He or she will be expected to

arrive at the College of International Cultural Exchange, NWU either in March or

September, 2019 to attend the spring or fall semester. The relevant overseas study

information for NWU is available on its official website:

http://mainpage2.nwu.edu.cn/gjxy/nwu/.

Sixth, NWU offers Chinese winners priority admission to the postgraduate MTI

program (Master of Translation and Interpretation) at the School of Foreign

Languages, NWU. If the 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd Award Chinese winners apply for the MTI

program, they are entitled to have the admission priority.

Competition Evaluation

Seventh, it is our imperative to carry forward Helen Snow’s code of honor, “honesty,

faith, and seeking truth from facts.” To this end, it is expected that all entrants

guarantee the work they submit to the competition is their own. Supplementary tests

and interviews will be arranged for the 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd Grade Award winners.

Eighth, the School of Foreign Languages, NWU is responsible for all the necessary

communications regarding this competition. The Awards Committee, which is

selected by the STA Sub-committee for Literature Translation, is composed of noted

3

experts in foreign language education, bilingual translation and literary review.

Review of the English-Chinese and the Chinese-English papers will be evaluated

separately by two different groups under the Awards Committee. The competition is

supervised by the Edgar & Helen Snow Studies Center under authorization from the

Helen Foster Snow Literary Trust in the United States.

Submission of Entries

Ninth, each contestant is free to participate in one or both divisions of the

competition. Contestants are only allowed to submit the translation paper once. No

entry can be submitted and then resubmitted in a revised version.

Tenth, translation papers should be typed on A4 paper using either Times New

Roman or Song font in 12-point-type and double- or 1.5-spaced. Contestants are not

allowed to indicate their name, gender or school on the paper in any way or via any

form. Otherwise, the translation paper faces automatic disqualification. The contestant

is required to fill in his/her personal information only on the stipulated form. The

organizers thereby ensure that the judges receive all entries anonymously.

Eleventh, the contestant’s translation paper and personal information must be emailed

in PDF form to the official mailbox of the competition, helensnow1937@163.com . It

is suggested that the email be headed: contestant’s name + E-C/C-E for more efficient

filing and processing.

Twelfth, the deadline for submitting papers is midnight on May 31, 2018 (Beijing

local time). Any email that is received after the deadline will not be accepted.
